Crystal Kingdom Dizzy
=====================
You must have heard of Dizzy. Come on you must have? This is
Dizzy's seventh adventure and it's still as good as the
other six if I may say so! If you don't know Dizzy (where
have you been for the past five years?) then you're just
about to find out.
Dizzy was first created on the Spectrum by two people, known
as the "Oliver Twins". He was (and still is!) an egg with
red boxing gloves (OK, OK - I know it sounds weird!) who
appeared in his own adventure-dodge-platform type game,
solving puzzles, rescuing people (especially Dizzy's
friends, the Yolkfolk) and making you rather frustrated!
Dizzy's first adventure was rather bleak. You had to
collect the ingredients of a potion to kill the Evil Wizard
Zaks, but his other adventures have grown to become much
better; one, of course, is Crystal Kingdom. In fact, Dizzy
has now become one of the world's best computer game
characters; forget Mario, forget Sonic - Dizzy is here, and
will be for quite a long while. Anyway, I must get on with
it or you'll be here forever. Here's the scenario taken
directly from the manual.
The sun does not always shine in the Yolkfolk village. In
fact, this particular day is looking remarkably grim. Stormy
clouds thunder across the sky, the rain hammers down, the
electricity flickers and, to top it all, Grand Dizzy is in
an awful mood.
The source of Grand Dizzy's bad mood is his egg-ache (!).
The old duffer had been practising his somersaults in the
kitchen and slipped on the wet floor. "What do you think
you're doing bouncing around like that at your age?!"
groaned Dizzy under the strain of picking up the old egg.
"You'll give yourself a nasty crack on the head."
"It's the temple in the Crystal Kingdom," spluttered Grand
Dizzy, "it's been robbed. Every egg knows that if the
crystal sword, the chalice and the crown are taken from the
temple, terrible things will happen to the Yolkfolk!" Dizzy
looked outside. Things did look decidedly bad. "It still
doesn't explain why you were jumping off the kitchen chair,
Grand Dizzy" said Dizzy. "Well, young fella-m'-egg," said
Grand Dizzy puffing himself up slightly (have you ever seen
a puffed egg; boiled, poached and fried, but never
puffed!!), "I'm going to get into shape, pack my knapsack
and save the Yolkfolk myself. I was really heroic in my day,
y'know."
A salty tear formed in Dizzy's eye. "I don't know, Grand
Dizzy, what are we going to do with you?" gushed Dizzy in
his best sympathetic, yet caring, voice. Grand Dizzy was
packed off to bed. But the moment everyone's back was
turned, he jumped up and continued to whinge loudly at
anything he could find that would listen.
Dizzy decided that he must begin his trek to retrieve the
Yolkfolk's treasure. He packed his knapsack asnd popped on
his new safari hat.
Dizzy grimaced and, through gritted teeth, dramatically
declared "Don't fear, Grand Dizzy! The lost treasures of the
Yolkfolk will soon be found!". And so Dizzy began a whole
new adventure - can our hero succeed again?
Well! There you have it. It may be a little bit childish,
but it's the game itself that really counts. On opening the
well-presented box you find a poster and two collector's
cards containing some of the Yolkfolk on them. There are two
disks this time (the other adventures only had the one) as
well as a small instruction sheet. This is quite well-
written, although doesn't say much, and it is well worth
noting that if you want to use a joystick it should be
plugged into PORT ONE. The manual doesn't tell you this.
The game itself has very good, cartoony graphics with some
good "mini" animations as well as a bouncy tune. The title
screen's music is also very well-written with some nice
effects and digitised speech.
On the puzzle side, some are easy, some are hard. You really
have to think of some bizarre things and basically try
everything if you're to succeed and complete a Dizzy game.
You'll know this if you're a fan! A simple puzzle would be
this; use an umbrella to walk under the waterfall or if
Denzil asks you for a screwdriver, go and find one! An
example of a hard one is using the whip to swing across the
wide platform (!) or finding Dozy in a hammock, cutting the
ropes holding the hammock and realising it is a flag!!
I don't really have any complaints about the game except
one. In the instructions it states after completing each
"Act" (Dizzy is split up into four acts: The Yolkfolk
Village, Captain Blackheart's Pirate Ship, Desert Island and
the Crystal Palace) you are given a password which you can
type in when you die to go back to the "Act" you died on. So
far I've got up to Act Three, but have never been given a
password. I've rang Codemasters, left a message for them,
written to them but, unfortunately, they haven't replied.
Before I go, I'll leave you with a short description of the
Yolkfolk; Dizzy's eggy friends!
DAISY: Dizzy's girlfriend. Whether she still is or not is
another matter!
DOZY: Always asleep. You normally have to try hard to get
clues from him.
DENZIL: The coolest egg on the streets! Denzil, with his
tinted sunglasses and sexy body, will give you lots of
clues!
GRAND DIZZY: This is the OAP of the Yolkfolk. He's old and
his senses aren't what they used to be. Hint: give the genie
the crystal to wake up Grand Dizzy, give him his specs and
then give him the newspaper and keep on hassling him!
DORA: She's always nagging Dizzy. But if you do her a nice
turn, she might do something nice for you!
DYLAN: Dizzy's hippy friend. You'll easily be able to get
clues out of him, dude!
Well, that has summed up Crystal Kingdom quite well, I
think. As Dylan would say; be there or be square!
